7 Tips To Help You Survive Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

It’s turkey day again and all of my gym clients want to know what they should do to keep from going off the deep end this weekend.

It is simple.

If you can remember that Thanksgiving is about one meal, then you are golden. If you make Thanksgiving a whole weekend affair, then you might be in some trouble.

Here is the deal…

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate the things we are thankful for in our daily lives. Family, friends, careers, and a healthy lifestyle are just a few things we should consider as main components that mean a lot.

I am thankful for so many things:

  • My family, the guys (Beau and Will) and extended family included (mom, dad, sisters, grandparents, etc).
  • My health (My ankle is pretty much all healed up, so I am getting better workouts in thankfully).
  • A successful business (The gym has been open for less than a year and we are doing great.)
  • My clientele both in the gym and online (You make me want to be a better trainer everyday.)
  • My mastermind participants (More on this later.)

These are just a few things I think are worth being thankful for on a day where focusing on what truly brings happiness to our lives takes center stage. However, over the Thanksgiving holiday too many of us step over the edge.

So here is my 7 step plan for surviving Thanksgiving:

  1. Wednesday night: Eat clean and no cheating.
  2. Thursday morning: Get in a good workout and a healthy breakfast.
  3. Thursday afternoon: Help prepare the meal and make good choices by not noshing on too many appetizers that can break the bank.
  4. Thursday evening: Eat whatever you want and enjoy it all, in moderation.
  5. After dinner: Go on a short 20 minute walk with family and enjoy their company.
  6. Enjoy dessert (in moderation) by having a few forkfuls of a few dishes.
  7. Friday: Get back on the horse.

You see, if you have been doing your homework, making good nutritional choices, getting in your workouts, and making the most of your fitness lifestyle you can indulge from time to time.

That is what living is about. Sure you make some sacrifices. But those sacrifices are so you can enjoy the things that really count.

Speaking of what really counts… here are a few things you definitely need to be aware of for the next couple of weeks:

Meet My Mastermind Group - I have been talking about the power of masterminding for years. You have read about how I surround myself with people who I believe are the best of the best in their chosen fields. So I am going to introduce you to them next week. Each day of that week I will send a little background information and a link to their website.

You will learn why these people are successful at helping their clients achieve great results in other areas of fitness and life. These people are the ones who make me better for you as well. It is not up to me to decide if you need their help. But you should know that each and every one is truly an expert and you would be wise to seek out their advice if you find that you need help in these areas as well.

Holiday Survival Guide –
I am going to give you access to the same programs I am using at the gym to make sure that you at the very least, maintain you current weight, body fat and lifestyle over the holidays.

I don’t believe that it is smart to really try and lose a ton of body fat over the holidays. That is what we have New Years resolutions for, right? Not really, but hopefully it will get you motivated. Anyway, maintenance is what it is all about.

Develop these two keys to success

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Throughout my 17 years as a coach, motivational speaker, and trainer I believe that there are many attributes that contribute to personal success.

However, two stand out above the rest:

  1. The Willingness To Take Action
  2. The Ability To Persevere

Some may argue that intelligence is important. Doesn’t everyone know at least one person who is really smart, but is also broke or down on their luck? We rationalize that off as they are “too smart for their own good”. However, too often they think they can beat the system without putting the time, effort, and sweat equity necessary to succeed.

What about overall knowledge? Yes, that is great too. But I’ve known plenty of people who have every letter of the alphabet after their name, lots of degrees, read every book known to mankind in their field, and will swear up and down that they know as much as the people who are making the big bucks and getting results. Strangely enough, they don’t have the bank accounts, or the body, or the happiness that successful people with just as much knowledge have every day.

Some people have enormous talent and potential. Well that is nice too. Some things come easy for people. Good for them. I have enough experience in my career with clients and players who have all the talent in the world, but have no desire to be the best they can be on a daily basis. I have never been too interested in all that…I want clients with desire and who want to perform.

Know what?

Historically my “performers” would almost always kick the crap out of their “potential” whether they were clients or athletes. However, most people are unwilling to take real action. They are “security people.” Unfortunately, opportunity and security are inversely proportionate.

You know the deal…no risk, no reward.

It’s no different when people say they’ll “start eating right next week”. Only next week turns into next month, then next year.

Each and every successful achievement begins with a decision to take action IMMEDIATELY.

I can’t tell you how many people I know who throw out a good (or great) idea in their field or the possibility to develop the product that will change the world. The action inevitably stays just that. Instead of becoming an action, it stays an idea.

I also know plenty of successful and wealthy people that I consider to be of average intelligence. But they took action and continue to take action.

I’ll be the first to admit, there have been times that I’ve considered doing something, only to get distracted, get lazy or simply take the path of least resistance – do nothing. But every success I’ve enjoyed has been a direct result of me making a decision and taking action.

The second part of this equation is having the ability to persevere. I promise you that if you take the next step to have the body of your dreams, launch your own business, write that book, take on a new project, or embrace a new challenge…

IT WILL HAPPEN!

Yes, there will be stumbling blocks along the way. Construction will be delayed, you might get writer’s block, you will miss a workout here and there, and you will make a bad choice or two.

You think it. And it can happen.

All part of the deal. The keys to success lie deep inside the people who are willing to move forward, take the chance, make a plan, look ahead and never give up.

Need a little more of a push that this is the way you too can get ahead? Watch this video. And if you are not convinced that you have the courage, intelligence, desire, and perseverance to handle a challenge or adversity, watch it again.

So that’s it. Two “secrets to success” that anyone can utilize to achieve their goals.

Nothing profound. But then again, most of the best stuff is simply common sense.

Enjoy!
