Why Working Out and Training On An Empty Stomach is a Horrible Idea!

I have never claimed to be a nutritional expert.  But, I do feel I can give solid advice and ensure my clients and athletes develop strong habits that will help them with their fitness and training routines.  Occasionally, I do have a question, and I always turn to Lucho Crisalle for answers.  He’s a Registered Dietitian and has worked with thousands of high profile celebrities and athletes and has even created a nutritional software program.

When I started the program for the Results Only POWER Transformation, I knew my clients needed to hear a few things from an expert other than me before they got started.  As a trainer, I know that when you present similar things over and over again, even in different ways, sometimes you need another presence to make your point.  I didn’t know I would acquire a major tool for my own personal training the day Lucho came to speak to my group.

Sometimes, I like to workout in the morning before breakfast and before my day kicks into high gear.  I am less likely to skip it if things get out of control and it revs me up for the whole day.

Most of the time I rolled out of bed, stumbled to the gym and I worked out on an empty stomach.  I knew it wasn’t ideal, but it worked for me.  Little did I know, I was missing the boat.

The other day as I prepared for an upcoming session, I was reviewing a video Lucho and I did for the program and listened to the section again on working out and eating plans.  Lucho explained in the seminar why everyone MUST have a little bit of healthy carbs and protein roughly 30 minutes before morning workouts.  Right now I am talking about morning workouts in particular, but if you workout late in the day (6 pm??) and you haven’t eaten since lunch (noon??) this applies to you as well.

So read on and learn.

For a change I decided to take a protein shake right after I got up.  I answered a few emails, sent the guys off to school and went to work out.  What a difference!  I felt more vibrant and energized during my workout.

And here’s why…

When you wake up in the morning, you are in a fasted state because you haven’t eaten anything since the night before.  That is why they call it breakfast.  You are breaking the night time fast.  You have not eaten since the time you went to sleep.  Often times it is longer if you eat an early dinner.

The theory is you burn more calories as fat because science shows that your workload capacity is decreased if your energy and nutritional stores are depleted. Therefore you don’t have the energy needed to increase your intensity for the short bursts of activity in the workouts I prescribe.

Unfortunately, the end result is less overall calories burned and a substantially less intense workout.  Your body could also rely on hard earned muscle for energy rather than unwanted body fat because it can take up to 20 minutes for fat burning to actually begin.

If this doesn’t convince you that a pre-workout snack is important I don’t know what else to do.

I want to lose fat, not muscle.

Try it and see if your workouts are not 25 -35% better.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Vacation Is Over, But Not Your Progress!

This is the time of year I really get moving in my business.  There are a few
reasons I know summer is winding down.  (My 3rd grade teacher would be
mortified to know I don’t remember the exact date summer is over or when
the longest and shortest days are).  You see, in Arizona it is always relatively
warm.  So the seasons don’t really change (one of the main reasons I love
living here).  And that makes it difficult to gauge.  But I do know that my
clients come back in droves, I see more school buses on the road, 3 day weekends
and long vacations become less prevalent, and all in all most people get back into
a regular routine.

I am a big fan of taking time off in the summer.  I try to get my clients to use more of a maintenance plan for their training, especially because I want all of my athletes to take a few weeks off (at least) to let their bodies heal and recover before the season begins.

But things do change NOW.

Vacation is over and it’s time to get back to your regular routine, the day-to-day schedule that keeps you motivated and on task.  This is when you make steady consistent changes to your physique and chip away at any unwanted body fat so that you can enjoy your next planned vacation.  For me, that means a little R&R around the holidays when it is hard to stay on a schedule anyway.

While that may seem like a long time from now, in perspective, it is really only 16 weeks away!  Just think of the gains you can make in adding lean muscle mass and trimming off body fat in 16 weeks!

Start to develop a mindset of making small changes over the next 2 weeks.  Then, after Labor Day, I will write about how you can make all those changes permanent.

I cannot believe how many people have taken advantage of the Building Your “A” Game month long discount!

For now, take a look at the article below.  I know that summer is a hard time to stay focused on nutrition.  So I decided to write a short and sweet tip on why you need to eat before you workout.

I told you to start to develop a mindset for making small changes over the next 2 weeks.  Here is a head start!

FAQs Answered

Welcome to all the new subscribers!!

If you have no idea what I am talking about…I did an interview 2 weeks ago for Golf Smarter and we have a huge new list of people who have joined the Results Only family.

The summer just keeps flying by and I have been busier than ever.  I need to do a small answer session in this newsletter to answer all the emails I have received.  To keep the length of this newsletter short, I will answer a bunch of questions for now and get to an article next time.  I hope that is OK with everyone.  The topics are in no specific order.  There are also some great offers for you here, so check them all out.

* How did your Lacrosse team do this summer?  You will be happy to know that the Arizona Starz Lacrosse team went to LA and won the tournament!  These young men are sure to be leaders at their schools and on their teams once school starts.  It has been impressive to get this group of boys together and watch them work unselfishly and become young men.  One of the best parts of coaching has been helping young people like these see their own potential come true.

* What about the discount you promised us on Building Your “A” Game?  You are right!  I did promise you a discount.  Last month I was interviewed on a podcast called GolfSmarterPodcast.com.  It is run by a huge golf enthusiast named Fred Greene.  He has a great show on www.iTunes.com.  If you are not familiar with what a podcast is…think of an interview you can download to your computer and onto your MP3 player to listen to in your car, when you workout, or anytime that works for you.  It is F.R.E.E. and easy to get.

If you would like to hear the interview, all you have to do is go to iTunes and type ‘golf smarter’ into the search box in the upper right hand corner.  Once the search is through you will see a yellow and green icon with a golf ball on it for the Golf Smarter podcast.  Click on that icon and you will see the 85 shows he has already produced.  You can listen right there or download it to your computer and listen anytime.

While you are at it, if golf is your thing…you definitely should subscribe to the show.  It is produced every 2 weeks.  And if the feedback I have been getting is any indication, we will be doing some regular interviews and even start a new Golf Smarter fitness show.

* So where is the discount?  Until September 3rd, you can get the Building Your “A” Game DVD for just $69.  That’s right, almost $30 off!  Here is the deal.  Go to www.buildingyouragame.com and get the discount because you have only a few more weeks to take advantage.  Remember, do not go to the regular home page as this is only a discount for the Golf Smarter and Catalyst Experts newsletter subscribers.

* I miss the Motivational Tips.  Are you bringing them back?  They will be back as of September 3rd.  We have come up with a cool template that is easy to read.  Also, the tips will be delivered once a week rather than every day.  I know so many of you looked forward to a daily tip from Results Only.  The problem is that spam mail has made it difficult to send emails everyday.  Some spam filters blacklist legitimate newsletter providers such as Results Only without us even knowing it.  I want to eliminate those kinds of problems and this seems to be the most effective way to send you the tips without them getting blocked.  Make sure to send a blank email to  ResultsOnly-261561@autocontactor.com to sign up for the tips if you would like to receive them.

* Are you going to do another P.O.W.E.R. Transformation?  Yes!  Results Only will be doing another transformation this fall.  It will once again be for Arizona residents only.  I did very well with the first group of participants and I want to really get the program down before I launch it to the general public.  For any new readers…the P.O.W.E.R. Transformation is a 12 week fitness program that guarantees to make you look, feel, and get into the best shape of your life.  The initial group made such huge transformations and they are continuing to keep the body fat off and live a healthy lifestyle.  We partnered with my friend and nutritionist, Lucho Crisalle, who outlined a supplement and nutritional program that helped all the participants build the bodies they always dreamed of.  If you are an Arizona resident feel free to contact us.  But for the rest of the country…let me get one more program under my belt to make sure I create the most comprehensive program ever built.

* Are you coming to my area and when will I get a chance to work out with you in person?  The year of 2007 is booked.  I have speaking engagements planned for all over the globe and 2008 is already shaping up nicely.  My Assistant is currently fielding opportunities for conferences, companies, universities and other outlets for my speaking programs.  In the near future, we will have an Upcoming Events section that will keep you posted.  If you are interested in featuring Results Only at your next event, conference or seminar, please contact us Support@ResultsOnly.com.
As for now, this should answer some of the more common questions we get on a daily and sometimes hourly basis.  If you have any questions or need to get some information from me, feel free to email us at support@resultsonly.com and we will be sure to get on it ASAP.

For now, enjoy the rest of the next two weeks.  We will be back with a new article and updates on all the programs.  Make sure to fit in your workouts and continue to make progress.

Save the World By Getting Fit. Who Knew You Had That Kind of Impact?

Each day we have a ton of errands we run.  We all need to make short trips to the grocery store, pick up dry cleaning, go to the bank and a multitude of mindless trips that are necessary to get us through our daily lives.  I bet many of you even hop in the car to get to the gym.  Getting things done is a part of life that we all need to do.

What if I made it all a little easier and more efficient for you to get it done, add a work out and give a little back to the planet?

It can happen.  No matter what your views on global warming are, it is not that hard to see that you could make a difference in walking or taking a bike around town from time to time rather than getting in the car.

Let me give you an example of how you can make a difference.

Let’s say you live in a place where you have a grocery store, dry cleaner, pharmacy, your local bank, a restaurant, and probably a coffee shop within a mile to 1 ½ miles of your house.  And let’s say rather than driving every time you needed something from any of those places, you hoofed it up to the mini mall to run your errands.

If you walked 10 miles each week instead of jumping in the car, studies show you could potentially eliminate 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every single year.  Now… not only are you helping your fellow earth inhabitants but you are breathing better air for yourself and you are burning approximately 1,000 calories more per week for a person who weighs an average of 160 pounds.

We all have those daily chores that we need to fulfill.  It’s a necessary evil and you simply must get it done.  By choosing to walk those 10 miles a week instead of driving, you will lose an extra 1.3 pounds of fat every month by doing nothing more than walking to the errands rather than driving.

These numbers are extremely conservative and you should recognize if you happen to be a bigger person who weighs more than 160 pounds you are going to lose a lot more weight and get in a lot better shape simple because you have more to carry.  Now add into the equation, if you pick up 1, 2, or 3 bags of grocery’s, you might be carrying an extra 10-12 pounds of stuff.  You have a little more to carry and your energy expenditure is exponentially increased.

You are really making a difference now.

Heck, what if I was a true crunchy granola type and I told you to run out and get some of those recyclable bags so you don’t need to choose paper or plastic?  Or maybe I could go on and on about not using Styrofoam for your goods from the deli counter.  While you are at it, I want you to go out and buy an electric car.

OK, I believe I have gotten a little carried away.  But I think you get my point.  What if you took the time to change your walk to more of a jog, and what if you your mini mall is more than 1 mile away?  You could essentially lose 3-5 pounds a month, no change in diet, spend a little time outside and still get all your errands done.  You are becoming more fit all while making the world around you a little better. Whether you agree or disagree with the views of the politics of global warming, this is a win/win situation.  At this point who cares about all that?  You are losing weight and getting in shape.

I already see the argument coming.  Bobby, it will take longer to get my errands done.  If I follow your advice I am adding a couple of hours of time each week to those errands.  OK, let me get this straight, you are outside, in the fresh air, getting exercise, probably listening to your MP3 player and you want to complain about the extra time?  Sorry I have an answer for that too.

TiVo American Idol, Survivor, or whatever TV shows you watch.  Just cutting out the commercials probable saves 20 minutes per show.  Download the book you’re reading on to your ipod and listen to it as you walk.  Multitasking is a wonderful thing.

You are lowering your stress level, reducing your chance of heart disease, losing unwanted fat, lowering the carbon dioxide emissions by 500 pounds per year and saving the planet.

My gosh, the ice caps are melting, the California coast is falling into the ocean and before you know it New York will be underwater.  All because you didn’t want to walk to the grocery store on a Saturday morning.

So maybe the planet is not in jeopardy and all the hype is just that… hype.  I have no idea.  I got this information and thought my readers would like me to share it with them.  For some it will motivate them because I have a ton of clients who need something to get them going.  They are more likely to workout when they have a cause.

Millions of women each year start a program because they want to do a breast cancer walk.  They look at it as a way to help out the Cancer Society.  Sure they are helping themselves, but they are doing it with cancer awareness in mind.

Some people will read this and use it to start walking, while others will read it and say it is an easy way to workout and get things done.  Others will look this over and say Bobby is a “nut job” and his little rant made me laugh out loud in my office cubicle today.  Great, at least they burned a little energy laughing and getting their abs to move.  See, I am a sneaky little bugger aren’t I?

(Side note: it takes 13 muscles to laugh, 40 to frown, want to be lazy? Laugh a lot)

No matter how you look at it, save the earth by walking, or get your butt in shape by walking… getting a little walk in is good for ya’.
