How You Can Use A Deck Of Cards To Ensure You Get The Summer Body You Want!

Many years ago, I remember reading about how Bo Jackson first started training to get the hard athletic body he had developed.  If you do not remember Bo Jackson, he was one of the original two sport athletes.  He played football and baseball at the highest levels and was quite successful at both.

In his training, he chose two exercises – push ups and squats.  Red cards were push ups and black cards were squats.  Whatever number he flipped was the number of repetitions he needed to do for that movement.  All face cards equaled 15 in his workout.  As you can imagine this was quite the routine, especially if you got a series of face cards all the same color in a row.  While this is a great idea in theory, there are definitely some muscle overuse issues with this plan.

I decided to make some changes to the workout so it could be more appropriate for the masses.  I also encourage you to do the same.  If you have the opportunity to try a few cool ideas and they work for you, please be sure to write me at bobby.kelly@resultsonly.com and let me know your progress and ideas.

Take a regular deck of playing cards. Include the jokers if you want. (You will see why later)

The first thing is to systemize the deck.

Some people like to assign all the reds’ upper body and all the blacks’ lower body. I like to choose a different approach.  It is a little more detailed but I believe it gives a better workout.  But your workout is your own and you can change it as you wish.

Spades: Squats or walking lunges

Clubs : All core work crunches, alternate side crunches, or bridges

Hearts: Cardio – jump rope, jacks or up downs (aka burpees)

Diamonds: Push-ups or pull-ups (modified is OK)

* All face cards are 10 repetitions each
* All Aces are 11 repetitions
* 2,3,4′s are low for reps, so add a 1 in front of them to make them 12 ,13,14
* If you keep the joker in, make each joker a set of 20 mountain climbers

This workout takes about 30 minutes if you are in extremely good shape and no longer than 45 minutes to an hour if you are getting into shape.  The workout is constantly changing and it is an awesome way to do conditioning, keep things new and get a full body workout!

Modifications:
* You can start by taking out the face cards to make it a smaller deck with lower numbers
* You can also change the moves to be a little easier
* You can also make every 5 and 6 a rest to give you a series of 50 and 60 second rests
* Do it with a partner and do every other card
* Take a break every 8 cards to ensure ample rest
* Make the face cards value change: Jacks-11, Queens-12, Kings-13, Aces-15

Your workout is never the same, and constantly engaging. You don’t have to put any thought into it because It is very simple to follow, and works your whole body.

Unless:

Sometimes the “God of Cards” will not shine favorably down upon you.  You see every once in a while you will get 3 or 4 hearts in a row and you can get slammed.  In the initial version, that wouldn’t be so bad because I let you alternate between movements.  But if you only choose one exercise for each suit … well my friend, you are in for a long 30 minutes.

Another benefit is you always know where you stand in the workout because you can see the amount of cards left in the deck and you know you are getting closer to the finish line.  You can literally see your workout ending.  This is also a no excuses type of workout because it can be done anywhere.  You can choose only body weight exercises.  Or if you have an exercise tube or belong to a gym, then the sky’s the limit.

Now for today, I will give a short description of some of the lesser known exercises to keep things interesting.  In future emails I am going to send you to a link to the coaching site that has a description, pictorial and video presentation of all the exercises listed.

Up/Downs (A.K.A. Burpees) – Start standing with your feet shoulder-width apart.  Squat down and place the palms of your hands outside and slightly forward of your feet.  Support your weight with your hands under your shoulders and thrust your feet backward, so that you are in the traditional “top position” for a standard pushup.  To get back up, pull your feet up to your hands in one movement, and stand back up to the original position.

Mountain Climbers – Begin in a push-up position.  Keep the head in line with the body and contract your abs. Start by bringing the right knee to the chest and back to your starting position then quickly alternate to the left leg and continue switching back and forth.  Every time your right and left leg do a repetition, consider that one repetition.

These are two of the lesser known exercises for many of my readers.  If you don’t know some of the other movements it is important to get proper guidance before starting any workout.  One of the ways to do this would be to join www.resultsonlycoaching.com and you will have immediate access to videos, descriptions and monthly workouts just like the workout you read here today.  Good luck and remember you will never play 52 card pick up the same way again after this workout.

Summer Body Prep!

A ton of things are going on here in the southwest.  Arizona is at its best this time of year.  We have beautiful days and cool nights.   The mountains are full of people getting some hiking in and the bikers are out in full force getting ready for some of the many rides Arizona puts on over the next few months.

While much of the rest of the country is still dealing with the remnants of the winter doldrums, we are gearing up for tank tops, spaghetti straps, shorts, bathing suits, and let’s not forget the guys going shirtless and the ladies bikinis.

You see, when it gets to be 110° there is very little choice to get cool.  I must admit that rarely do I get the client who puts on winter weight here in Arizona like I did in Washington D.C., simply because we really don’t have to bundle up all that much over the cooler months.  Nevertheless, a bathing suit is a bathing suit, so everything shows.

The transformation group is in the final phase and we will be getting our body fat tested in early May to reveal the best competitor.  I didn’t want to use the term “biggest loser” either… because my clients are intelligent they realize they may not need to lose as much weight as they think and they will put on some muscle along the way.

I have spent some time tweaking the website over the weekend looking for things that needed updates.  As you know we changed some of our programming, there is a new look and some new information.

Please take a moment to look around.  There are definitely items that are new and you won’t want to miss.

I also wanted to thank so many of you for your kind remarks regarding the Chris Klug article.  It was nice to read that you appreciated the fact that I work with so many “celebrities” and choose not to name drop.  And that it was obvious that I want to help anyone who wants to make changes to their bodies and lives, not just the “famous” people.  It really is such a fine line in marketing to help get your programs in front of so many people to just cave in and say I train “so and so” so you should train with me too.

For today’s article I wanted to add a little creativity to your workouts.  Knowing that my clients are getting in summer shape, I need to ensure that as many of their workouts are used for optimum fat burning sessions. Therefore, I need to mix the perfect blend of high intensity cardio and strength.

As many of you know, I try and really change things up on a regular basis.  So for this workout you will need a deck of cards.  That is all I will say but be prepared for one heck of a ride. Try it out on your next routine I think you will enjoy the variety and the nonstop intensity.

Remember Better Bodies = Better Results,

You Are Completely Out Of Your Mind If You Don’t Do This. Really!

Newsweek – March 26th, 2007- Headline- Exercise and the Brain… Research says exercise will make you smarter.

Yes, finally a study that shows that you can actually generate nerve endings from working out.  Charles Hillman is a PhD at the University of Illinois and he was tired of the stereotype of the “dumb” jock so he did something about it.  He has been an athlete all his life and it just didn’t make sense.  He knows a lot of smart athletes and in the classes he currently teaches, often times it is the athletes who set the curve on his exams.

I am not going to re-write the information in this newsletter, but I think it is important that if you get a chance to pick up the issue that you take the time to read the articles. We all know that exercise will lower your risk for just about every ailment from coronary artery disease to battling Alzheimer’s and ADHD.  Now there is proof it will make you smarter too.

This study is a personal trainer’s dream.  Remember the ad on TV during the Reagan years, “This is your brain; this is your brain on drugs?”  I have a whole new slogan.

This is your brain:

(show picture of a black and white brain)

This is your brain on exercise:

(now show a picture of the stimulated brain with parts of the brain colored to show activity).

Someone from the Center for Disease and Prevention, please steal this idea!

Hillman has even gotten a Senator from Kentucky to sponsor a bill putting in ½ an hour of exercise a day back in schools.  We can only dream that it passes.  The abilities that the initial studies proved for children in the ages of 3rd through 5th grade are so encouraging.  I am pleased to have something concrete to show parents to help them get their children more active.

So what does this all mean for you?  It just gives you another reason why making time for exercise is so important.  With an astonishing low 31% of the American population 18 and over choosing to exercise, (yes that means that almost 70 % don’t do anything), why would you want to fall into that category?

I know part of the reason you subscribe to the Catalyst Coaching newsletter is because you are not one of the almost 70%.

What is a good protocol?

It is important to get activity period, but the Newsweek article and many other studies are proving that short bouts of High Intensity Training is the most beneficial for your body, your mood, your health, and now your mind.

Gee, where have you heard that before?  Right here, that’s where.

It can be as short as 25-30 minutes or as long as 60 minutes depending on your goals and your motivation.  I believe that one of the greatest ways to get the most bang for your buck is to do circuit training.  You get so much done, in a short amount of time and you receive the benefit of it all.

You can alternate an upper body move with a lower body move.  Let’s say you use a set of bicep curls and alternate with squats.  You do 12- 15 of each and while one body part is working, the other is resting.  This is not rocket science.  It’s just good educated structure.

Many of you are probably accustomed to trying some of this training but for those of you who are not, you can always take a look at the membership site where we have custom made workouts designed with this exact principle.

These carefully planned programs are exactly timed with the proper work rest ratio and will get you in and out of the gym in 30 – 45 minutes if you stay focused.  With studies like Dr. Hillman’s coming out, along with an epidemic of obesity in our country, why be average?  Making time for fitness will not only save your health, make you look and feel great, add years to your life, but now it makes you smarter too.

Now you know why I said you would have to be crazy not to start now.

One “Cool” Guy!

I just spent time with One “Cool” Guy.

A lot of times I shy away from name dropping.  I am so against it that I have an agreement with my “famous” actors, actresses, athletes and politicians who I train.  If they want to go out and tell people that they work with me fine, but unless I ask them specifically or they tell me specifically to tell people I just treat them like everyday people.

I have some of the most physically fit moms, dads, and kids in Arizona that train with me.  They have everyday jobs, with every day lives.  I train them the same way I train the “celebrities”.  I use the same techniques, same intensities, same protocols and same workouts.  So why is it necessary to say I work with Mr./Mrs./Ms. “So and So Hot Shot Celeb” and have everyone think I am some hot shot myself?

Some of my colleagues tell me I am insane to not use my clients’ status to advance my career.  I say that I love what I do, I make a great living and the people I work with trust me.   That is more important than name dropping.

However, I believe this weekend was worth telling you about.   For the past few years, my guys have attended a snow board camp run by Chris Klug.  You may or may not have heard of him if you do not follow snowboarding.  I have met a him a bunch of times over the past few years and he is by far one of the most friendly, down to earth, amazingly motivating teachers on the planet.  He makes everyone feel comfortable and he never forgets a name.  He has won:

* Four World Cup victories
* Three Grand Prix wins
* Five National titles
* A U.S. Open Victory
* and sixth place in the 1998 Winter Olympics!

For the past few years, I sent the boys to camp and went off on my own, did my own thing and stayed out of the way.   I am an above-average boarder.  I surfed as a kid and picked it up pretty easily.  I like to hit the terrain park and ride the boxes and table tops and do a few tricks here and there.  But I had no desire to “catch big air’, do the half pipe or become an X Game contestant.

This year I still didn’t join the camp but I decided to stay on the mountain and follow the group around.  Chris keeps the camp small and brings in top notch pro snowboard athletes like Tricia Byrnes, Travis McLain, Justin Reiter, Mitch Stout.  Much to my surprise, this camp was less about boarding and more about developing a great attitude and becoming passionate about something you love.

I would coyly sit back at the top of the hill and watch Chris and his instructors completely engage boys and girls, men and women from ages 8 to 58 with humor, anecdotal stories interjected with techniques for the upcoming tasks.  I watched blatant novices who barely belonged on a mountain, let alone strapped to board aiming down in utter fear, take the lessons.  After three days these same participants ended the camp doing “gnarly” tricks, catching “semi-big air” and even dared to enter the half pipe for a run or two.

I would listen in at lunch with my 14 year old and hear great stories of being a pro athlete and the way they learned to love something so much that they just have to do it.  They just have the luxury of making a living and representing the United States all over the world competing.

Here is one of my favorite things that is usually unheard of when I see many sports celebrities do sport specific camps.  Every morning started with a warm-up and stretch session.  So many times these pros are set up to attend something like this by their agent and it turns out to be nothing more than a glorified autograph session.

For Chris Klug and friends it was a chance to teach and give back.   They know they are lucky and that their hard work and determination paid off and they want to share it with tomorrows up and coming stars.  They don’t just go out and show off.  They teach and the students eat it up.

Olympic athletes of their caliber sometimes forget that kids look up to them.  I often train professional athletes that have no business teaching.  They are much better at doing their chosen craft, but somehow cannot pass on the info to students.   Much like Tiger Woods, Chris and his crew are the best at their sport and he can interact and teach which is not common with today’s athletes.  To the passer by these guys and gals were just like everybody else.  This makes learning from them comfortable and fun but really informative.

Anyway… I am glad I stuck around.   The Chris Klug Camp teaches kids to become student athletes with a passion for snowboarding.  If you are interested in finding out about next year’s camp, get on his mailing list www.chrisklug.com and we can take his camp together next year because I doubt I am sitting another one out again.

Remember,

Better Bodies = Better Results
