Greg Norman has always been a powerful presence on the golf course. However many of you who are on my list may know him more for his wine than golf because he has been away from the game for such a long time.
This past weekend “the Shark” (for those of you who didn’t know it) struck again at age 53. Tiger Woo
ds has been sidelined with a knee injury and the PGA Tour was frazzled that viewership would be down during his absence. The golf gods answered in spades giving an aging (in golf terms only) professional a chance to make history.
Greg did not fulfill the dream many wanted. He did not fall part by any means, however he was forced to succumb to the golf course’s weather, winds, and treachery on the final day of competition.
Once again for those of you who do not follow golf, to make a run at winning a Major Championship at age 53 is unheard of so… one can imagine the questions Mr. Norman received throughout the week.
I was thrilled when he gave his major answer. Along with finally wrapping up a very public divorce, Greg Norman has made great strides in his many business ventures, he has recently married Chris Everett, the former tennis champ, he was on his honeymoon and felt that he was very happy
AND (the end all be all answer for me was)
Wait for it…
Fitness has kept his body, mind, and spirit young at heart. He was ready to take on the young guns of golf because he makes time to work out every single day. He has kept his body limber enough and strong enough to go out and play competitively, after very little preparation, and let years of instinct take over.
Greg Norman said this in almost every single interview I watched and read. Staying fit was one of the most important reasons he was able to contend in this major championship.
I suspect that he does a lot of core work and a reasonable amount of strength work based on his appearance. In the past he has spoken about his love of being around the water and if my memory serves me, he loves to surf. A great overall workout when done correctly. The bottom line is he did something that no one thought could be done in this day and age.
Sofor those of you who play golf as a hobby, as a form of exercise, and/or as a release from your daily activities, understand that what you do for fitness away from the course has just as much importance as what you do on the driving range.
Many of you reading this post may not be familiar with programs I have created. Since moving to Phoenix 7 years ago I have trained hundreds of golfers. Some professional, many amateur, and even have a National Championship. I was the strength and conditioning coach. The program I used is the same program I make available to the public.
www.buildingyouragame.com is where you can see for yourself how to add fitness into your daily golf routine and find the extra 20 yards on your longest drive, increase accuracy for your short game and feel just as good at the end of your round as you did when you started. It is 3 DVD’s that can changeyour game permanently and easily. Check it out.
As for Mr Norman, he has so many things going for him in his life. He has wealth, happiness, successful businesses and his overall health is extraordinary. I was glad to read and hear him state what I know to be obvious…
Fitness is the fountain of youth and as long as you make time for some daily activity there is nothing you cannot accomplish.
For all the golfers out there
